Modern Lessons - Classic Books and Beyond

The basic tenets of an education used to be what were called the 3 Rs - reading, writing and arithmetic. Vast tracts of famous novels and poems were learned by rote and reeled off parrot fashion in a bid to retain knowledge. Everything that could be learnt was done so in a structured way with what could today be seen as a fastidious adherence to set workbooks. Even sewing and craft lessons had a strong emphasis on learning a skill and not just 'being creative' in a loose way. In literature classic books were the staple diet of students and in other subjects, these educational books have become classics in themselves. Today, there are many options, ideas, philosophies on learning but when it comes to anything practical workshops and residential focused courses are undoubtedly an excellent way to learn, say for example you want to learn a skill, such as curtain making, which is perhaps no longer practiced by that many people.

There is a book on most subjects and all books, like courses are geared towards a certain skill set and a certain level of comprehension. One on one teaching, practice and a measured approach produced real skill. Learning with specialists is sometimes a lot easier and more cost and time effective in the long or even short run than piecing together information. Classic books in most subject can peek interest and initiate ideas but a student who wants to learn a skill such as curtain making needs one on one tuition as well. The great thing about books as well as learning through courses is that it is a way for someone to really get a flavour or a subject and an understanding of it without often having to invest in the tools of a trade from the outset.
